When I left home last Saturday morning to meet a group of fellow Rotarians in Springfield it was 45° according to the exterior thermometer on my car. If there was any good news it was that there was no significant amount of wind. It was the first of our cleanups for 2012

As you can see we participate in the Virginia Department of Transportation's "Adopt A Highway" program. We are regularly assigned the area of Rolling Road from Old Keene Mill Road south to the Fairfax County Parkway. That section of roadway is one of the busiest in the Springfield area.

The first order of business was to meet in the Einstein Brothers Bagel Bakery parking lot (this will play a major role later) and receive our stylish orange vests and trash bags. We "hit the road" in two or three person co-ed teams to different sections of Rolling Road.

Arthur was unable to accompany me in his usual role as photographer so I am using the same photos we took at our last cleanup of 2011. Obviously, he snapped this one of me for our own use.
The filled bags are left at curbside for subsequent pickup by VDOT.
Our work is complete and we have returned to Einstein Brothers Bagel Bakery to warm up and enjoy fellowship - after community service it is one of the important benefits of being a Rotarian anywhere in the world.

Karen, It's wonderful to see the community come together and give back. There is a real pride in a community that cares about each other and their environment.
Paula That is why organizations similar to Rotary exist all over the world
No kidding Karen! I had to turn the heat back on last night and I used up 3 of our fake fireplace logs in celebration.
If I see any trash in Springfield I now know who to call.
Steve If you see it just stop and pick it up - it might blow away before I got there
Karen - great job cleaning up! I saw a lot of folks on our side roads a week ago with bags - obviously cleaning up. Sounds like you all have fun, too!
Dagny Camaraderie is one of the attractive features of Rotary club membership. Of course, we all start with a community interest in service to others
I commend you for being such a "giver" - taking time from your busy day to help your community and being active in your Rotary Club. Why do people throw their trash out the window anyway? It aggravates me!!
Carla I do believe awarenwss has increased in the past 25 years and there is not as much trash anymore. Of course, ltter fines have made a dent
Karen, you and Arthur do so much for the community...a good pay it forward post. It snowed this morning and the temp is 45 degrees.....brrrr where did the warm days go ...
Good morning Karen,
Chilly weather for your project, but wonderful rewards - giving back to your community, and fellowship over a nice breakfast. What a wonderful day!
Rebecca And the forecast for this week is not much better
Lisa Yes it was - it was a Rotary day
